It was about 2 in the afternoon when we arrived in Christchurch. We read in the newspaper that day that Christchurch was experiencing one of its driest and warmest Aprils for a few years, we were somewhat disappointed as we got out of the car and got pleated with golf ball sized rain drops and it was freezing! The recent change in weather should maybe have been expected, as we drove through a small town called Belfast just before Christchurch! (Maybe it was a warning in disguise.)
An hour later we emerged from a discount store with more layers than an onion. with our new hats and fleeces we had a proper look around Christchurch, which took about 10 minutes. Although it probably has more character than most cities and towns in New Zealand, once you have taken in the central square and the Church that stands in the centre of it your more or less done. We decided to take refuge from the elements in the visitors centre and left 20 minutes later with slightly less money in our pockets having booked a traditional Maori cultural experience. As it turned out it was money well spent as we learned a little about the Maori culture and had good fun learning the Haka and some other dances.
That night we pulled into a nice backpackers but didn't actually make it inside as we clocked up our 3rd night on the trot in our mobile hotel. Having great fun though and looking forward to our next stop. More thumbnails ...
