After the 3 1/2 hour ferry crossing from Wellington to Picton on the South Island we picked up our car from the dodgy Indian rental company (otherwise known as Quality Rentals perhaps Rent a Dent would have been more appropriate). There wasn't much happening in Picton so we headed for Kiakoura. Kiakoura is a well known spot for whale watching because warm and cold currents converge there when the southern current hits the continental shelf it creates an up swelling current bringing great red clouds of krill to the surface- sperm whales favourite food.

After a successful first night in the car, with no complaints our backs reckoned they could take another night so we parked in the "whale-watchers' car park and saddled up for the night. That night we slept so well that we slept in for the whale watching but fortunately for us the weather was too bad for the boats to go out so that eased our conscience, along with the fact whale watching was $150 per person roughly 50 quid.

After our two nights in the 4 wheel Hilton we were in need of a valeting so we borrowed a local caravan park's amenities without permission for 15 minutes. Freshly showered we hit the road for Christchurch.
