After just an hour's drive we arrived in Taupo, a lovely resort town on the shore of New Zealand's largest lake.
Conor booked a 15,000 foot sky dive for the next day. That night we camped in a Department of Conservation camp site. Basically they are areas where camping is permitted but they have no facilities except for a hut with a pit drop toilet so its safer to head off into the trees armed with a few dock leaves!
We cooked up a pasta storm in our one pot and hit the sack.... That was until we were rudely awoken at 4.30am by an earthquake that measured 4.5 on the Richter Scale! The next morning we got showers in New Zealand's award winning toilets. Due to the awful weather Conor's sky-dive was cancelled so we decided to hit the road. Our next stop was meant to be the Tongariro National Park aka Mordor from Lord of The Rings, but because of the weather we decided to go there on the way back to Auckland in a fortnight.
