After picking up our new car we decided to head north of Auckland to the Bay of Islands. After a 4 hour drive we rolled into town. Famed for its stunning coastal scenery which is made up of 150 islands and dozens of coves, the Bay of Islands is one of the North Island's top tourist spots. As we only arrived at 4pm we quickly booked a tour for the following day to swim with the dolphins that live in the bay.
We picked up some beers and a chocolate fudge cake on the way to our camp site as it was Conor's birthday. The next morning we headed out on the boat to find some dolphins. As we headed further out to sea things began to get rough and it wasn't long before we got to see our chocolate fudge cake again! We emerged from the toilets pale faced and slipped into our wet suits before jumping into the freezing sea to play with the pod of dolphins we had found. It was good fun but the dolphins didn't want to play for too long as they were busy looking for breakfast. We spent the next 2 hours trying to look over the top of our sick bags at some of the lovely islands. Afterwards, we both agreed we had a good day but maybe a bit expensive at nearly 40 quid each. However, we are really glad to have something interesting and beautiful to see in comparison to the endless beaches of Australia and are looking forward to our next stop.
