Our last night in Oz was spent sleeping in Cairns airport. We flew to Brisbane the next morning to get our connecting flight to Auckland. Our last image of Oz was a straggly haired Brad "the surfer" type guy and his new Barbie bride and their matching singlets, his read "just" and hers "married"... we were glad to be leaving.
That was until we boarded the fish market-plane. The plane was full of a tour group of Chinese women and our seats were smack bang in the middle of them. When the plane was taking off we could hear smashing and rattling in the overhead compartment. 5 minutes later a yellow coloured fishy smelling liquid came dripping out all over Conor's head. The air hostess informed us that our bags were covered in fish oil which one of the Chinese women had been trying to smuggle into New Zealand.
That afternoon we arrived in Auckland and checked into a backpacker's hostel. We decided as it was Easter Sunday we would treat ourselves to a ... Burger King.
The next day we had to decide whether to buy or rent a car for the next month in New Zealand. We checked out a few backpacker car yards but the cars weren't up to much so we decided to rent. In the end we got a great deal on a car, $19 /7 quid per day for a 1999 Nissan which was in pretty good nick.
That night we went around all the other hostels looking at notice boards hunting for second-hand camping gear, we managed to get everything we needed for 1.50!
