Sydney Harbour Bridge on new Years Eve is one of those things you just have to do once in your life, so we weren't going to miss this opportunity and jumped on the 12 hour night bus. Mairead's institute friend Jane and her boyfriend Dave are living in Sydney for a few months so we arranged to stay with them. We got to Jane and Dave's flat at 10 in the morning and left soon after to get a good spot for the fireworks. Armed with a few slabs of stubbies and a couple of 5 litre boxes of wine (where they compromise the taste for the price of $10) we hit the road. When we got to the viewpoint there were already people there so we picked the next best spot and cracked open the beers and chilled in the hot sun!
As the day went on the park began to fill up quickly and by the first set of fireworks at 9pm there were thousands of people gathered to watch the worlds's greatest new years eve fireworks display! The 9pm display was just a taste of what was to come. The fireworks at midnight were amazing! it goes without saying that it was the best fireworks display both of us have ever seen. The atmosphere at the viewpoint was electric and we had a great night partying into the small hours!
The next day we didn't leave Jane and Dave's flat until 5pm as we were nursing serious hangovers. Anyway, it was 45oc outside! Eventually we ventured out when it had cooled to 40oc and hit Bondi beach. Or County Bondi as it is known by all the Irish in Sydney. O'Neills are actually thinking of bringing out a new County Bondi GAA shirt which would blend in nicely here in the sea of GAA shirts! We had some fish and chips and a few hairs of the dogs and then headed home. Hopefully we will have more time to spend at Bondi when we travel up the coast in April. We had a great time in Sydney with Jane and Dave but now its back to Melbourne to look for jobs and start earning some dollars!!
