It has rained continuously for the last 48 hours and counting. Somebody told us Hue was the wettest city in Nam and they were not lying! This place is wetter than Donegal on a summer's afternoon. It seems like there is plenty to do here but maybe not in this weather. It's a pity. We ventured out for a walk today and got completely soaked. We are just sitting in our room writing this hoping the weather is any worse in Belfast. We will probably venture to a backpacker's bar tomorrow for a game of pool, then we are off to Laos tomorrow. The weather forecast has just confirmed that a Typhoon had hit Vietnam, that explains the rain.

Summary of our time in Vietnam

We have told by other backpackers that Vietnam is their least favourite country in South East Asia "Im singin' in the.......er.......Typhoon!"
"Im singin' in the.......er.......Typhoon!"
. We would disagree. The people here are very nice and are on the whole helpful. The food varies as do the portions. We are starting to understand why the Vietnamese are so small! The food ranged from some badly done European dishes which were served in most restaurants to some authentic Vietnamese dishes such as Pho (pronounced Fu) which is noodle and herb broth which is generally eaten for breakfast but can be got 24/7 in most street stalls. Most day we ate from the stalls for breakfast lunch and dinner and would advise anyone wanting to try the local grub to do the same. If you're game enough order beef but don't be surprised to find a stray dog collar or lead in your dish! It didn't stop us and we are looking forward to a nice piece of Cavalier King Charles when we get home (you know who you are Jack).
The more we travelled north and away from the beach resorts the food became more authentic, none more so than Hoi An where you can find local dishes such as Cao Lao, white rose and great rice pancakes everywhere.
Before going to Vietnam be sure to check the weather as the north and south have different wet and dry seasons as we found out.
Some other good advice to other travellers would be to book any buses or tourist trips with a tour company as opposed to a hotel or guest house who will scoop a few dollars commission.
It is fairly easy to travel around Vietnam but it is pretty touristy.

Overall, although we only spent 10 days here we are glad we came here and would actually like to go further north had we more time.
