Krapot
Spent a night in Kampot based on what we had read about it. It was described as a French colonial town by a riverside. This sounded like the kind of place we could spend a night or two. It was more like a French town after a blitz by Nazi Germany! The buildings were run down, no roads, no restaurants and not a lot to do or see. We loaded up on beers, peanuts and chocolate from a local shop and had a night in our room watching the Man Utd match. We got up the next morning and caught a "taxi" to Sihanoukville. It was not your average taxi there was more people in it than a black taxi. No joking, there were eight adults and a baby. Two in the front passenger seat, the two of us two women and their baby in the back. One in the driver seat with the driver on top of him and away we went. Two hours, 213km and a breast feed or two later we arrived in the Ville.
Sihanoukville We headed over to Victory Beach on the far side of town. This was the backpacker end of town and was a bit cheaper. We found a nice bungalow village and got a hut for $2 a night. The bungalow was a pretty basic hut on stilts with a mozzy net but was really good fun, apart from the rats that joined in the craic with us at night by dancing on the rafters to our i-pod tunes. We spent both days there chilling out on the beach doing nothing. The strip of bars became a lot more seedier at night with young Cambodian prostitutes and older European men filling up most spots. We did not hang about this end much and spent most of our time around the bungalows which had a good bar and pool table. Two days here flew in and on the third day we jumped on two motorbikes and headed across town to Serendipity Beach which was about 3km away. It was more of the same for us there we hopped into a hammock each, ordered beers and coconuts and blissfully watched another day drift by.
That night we met up with the Aussie couple we had met up with in Phnom Penh a few days earlier. Had a few drinks in a beach bar, the craic was flying and it was turning into a good session, but the best was yet to come.... Since arriving in Sihanoukville we've seen a lot of exotic fruits, most being sold on the beach, but the one we were about to see next was definitely selling himself!! The bar lit up and came to life when the 3 lads cruised in. After a quick skinny dip the lads got their hot pants back on and strutted their stuff on the pole! The crowd were diving for their cameras and several snaps later the lads hit the road to a generous round of applause.
The next day we set off early for a boat trip to the nearby islands. It was a good day. After snorkeling in the morning we had a BBQ for lunch and checked out a few more islands. Later that night Mairead suggested that we should have another BBQ...on Conor's back!! Nobody told Conor about wearing a t-shirt whilst snorkeling and he received some serious burns and blistering to his shoulders and back. Arcade Fire or What?!! More thumbnails ...
