Well we managed to get here safe and sound. We had arranged an airport pickup with our hotel which is a good idea. The drive into the centre of Delhi took about 30 minutes. We thought we would have the car to ourselves however, it was not long before we noticed we had company! The floor was littered with ants and cockroaches but that was nothing compared to what was outside. No matter how much we thought we were prepared for Delhi, what you read, stories people tell you or what you think you can never quite imagine it until you see and smell it for yourself. When we arrived in our hotel which was fine and had a good sleep..until 6 the next morning when we saw and heard Delhi in its full glory. The chaos hits you from the minute you leave your hotel and you certainly need a day to adjust to the way of life. People on the street are either very friendly or are trying to make a quick rupee or two. Amongst the chaos of the people you can expect to see a cow or a monkey just wandering along. This afternoon we hired a driver to take us to The Red Fort and Gandhi's grave. The Red Fort is not particularly worth seeing but Gandhi's grave is quite peaceful and a welcomed escape from the madness. We also got the driver to take us to the secret booze store and we bought a few kingfisher beers which had to be polished in your room. Just today the dreaded Delhi belly has taken its first victim. Mairead who for the first three days has not been seen without antibacterial wash fell foul to her mercy!! Heading off tomorrow on a tour of Rajasthan for the next 15 days. Will write soon.
