This place is spectacular - the hills are covered in tea plantations that look like huge, green manicured gardens. The mountains above the height of the plantations are a bit like something you'd see in Connemara (made us a bit homesick actually!). And thrown in for good measure you've got a couple of waterfalls and a load of lakes. Of course the town itself is a bit ugly but who cares!
First day we set off on a trek with the aid of a map from the tourist office which makes the whole thing look very straightforward. Of course it's not and we go completely off the designated path. After rambling through tea plantations we end up at the top of the waterfall we were meant to be at the bottom of. Since the waterfall is around 100ft we figure we might as well cross where we are. This being India there's an opportunistic tea picker on hand to guide us to the path on the other side for a few rupees
Next day we get a bit more adventourous and rent a motorbike to tour the countryside. I haven't been on a motorbike since I was about seven and my uncle gave me a spin for about 5 minutes so it's a nervous start. Jonathan's loving it though and the road are perfect - really windy but very smooth and with great views. I soon get into it and we spend a great day just driving around.
After two days we feel like we've probably seen most of what Munnar has to offer and decide to head back down to lower land and towards the coast.
