Maduri didn't exactly work out as planned. First off the city is packed with tourist and pilgrims and it's tough to find a spot to stay. We get led to a grotty guesthouse by a chancer who we give about 20 cent for his troubles. They have a room - not surprising when we see the state of the place but beggars can't be choosers.
Since we've only planned one day here we want to make the most of it and catch a rickshaw to the Gandhi museum. We're not in on the secret, unmentioned in the brochures or guide books, that the museum is closed on Fridays and return defeated to the guesthouse. Later we visit the temple (which is the main tourist draw of Madurai) and realise Jonathan can't go in with his shorts. We debate going back to the guesthouse to change then acknowledge that we're not actually that bothered about the temple and take a token picture outside!
Next day we catch a bus and head for the hills - Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary.
