Although my initial plan was to take a PADI open water course in Ko Lanta, Thailand and had therefore (after ample research) purchased a return ticket to Bangkok, taking a closer look revealed dive shops being closed for the (monsoon) season. As Ko Phi Phi (where apparently it was business as usual) did not appeal to me that much, a suggestion to try my luck at the Perhentian Islands in Malaysia made perfect sense to me.
After having found a dive shop that sounded like fun (a tad apprehensive about people emphasizing that particular aspect), and a couple of e-mails back and forth plus all the "necessary" Internet and LP research, my plan is as follows:
Buy a ticket for the morning flight to KL as soon as I arrive in Bangkok (the overland journey was ruled out due to the volatile state of affairs in Thailand's southern provinces), spend 36 hours (explor)in(g) KL, leave on the night train to Wakaf Bharu and make my way to Pulau Perhantian Besar, spend 4 to 5 days diving & relaxing, then leave for a quick visit to Kota Bharu, followed by another quick trip to the Cameron Highlands just to end my trip in Penang from where I catch a flight back to Bangkok and home again.
To me this sounds pretty much like a (yuk!) package deal, but plans are there to be deviated from, right?
