Day 18: July 24, 2007 Frederick to Brevard
I awoke at 6:30 but refrained from getting up until my alarm went off at 7:00. I took a shower, which felt great.
Audrey and I left at 9:05 and drove to the rock shop in Frederick to buy some of the specimens we saw on our first day. Unfortunately, it did not open until noon so we hit the road, leaving via US 340 and making our way over to Winchester, VA where we picked up I-81. There was a light drizzle most of the way down. We alternated driving in 2-hour shifts, listening to XM radio the whole way.
We arrived in Brevard around 6:00. Liz and Claudia stepped out of the door as we pulled into the driveway. Liz and Audrey had not met before so we chatted a little before Audrey took off back to her world of Bianca, Marcus, Paige, and the ferrets.
Liz prepared a beef-kale dish, which I ate heartily and had a glass or two of Funky Llama wine: an Argentine Malbec. After dinner, we watched my videos, which came out really well. I want to go back already.
This was my best trip yet to Iceland. I think I will vary the route considerably on my next trip so that I can see the Westfjörður and the Sprengisandur. After that, I can alternate between the two routes.
