Day 2: June 21, 2007 Atlanta to Quito, Ecuador
Barbara and I met for breakfast and decided to take the 11:00 shuttle to the airport. There were no lines so we checked in and then walked the 5,000¡ä from the main terminal to the E-Concourse, taking our time to admire the mega-sculptures from Zimbabwe between the T- and A-Concourses. We switched duties watching bags and eating lunch. I read TIME Magazine cover to cover.
Our departure was delayed for an hour (Why didn¡¯t that happen yesterday!?!). We finally got airborne. After dinner I watched ¡°Breach¡± and then meditated, literally, until we landed.
Baggage claim and customs were fairly fast and efficient. It took us awhile to find Javier, our contact from Columbus Travel. He gave us our Gal¨¢pagos tickets and then we took the Hotel Dann Carlton Shuttle to the hotel where we met Margarita Lujo, our travel agent. Since our group had already left port in the Gal¨¢pagos, she proposed two ideas for us to catch up with them. One was to take a small boat for $800 and the other was to: 1) spend a night on Santa Cruz, 2) take a ferry to San Cristobal, 3) spend a night on San Cristobal, and 4) rejoin our group Sunday morning. Overall, the latter was less risky, so we chose that.
We shared a suite on the 12th floor. I got to bed around 12:30
