Day 151: January 13, 2008 Río Gallegos
I slept in until 9:30 and then had breakfast at the hotel. The desk loaned me a connection cable so I could check my email at the hotel but my old clunker computer isn't good for much more than that and word processing. I've never upgraded from System 9.1 because the University of Pittsburgh lab software that I use in my research won't operate on System 10.x. By now, most browsers require System 10.x so it's not much good with the internet. I wrote Chris Beauvais a letter of recommendation that should get him into heaven; I hope it gets him into Duke's Nicholas School for the Environment.
At 3:00, I went to the internet place that said they would open at 2:00 but they were still closed. I found an even better place in a small kiosk. I spent the rest of the afternoon and evening uploading my fotos from the Galápagos before going out for a so-so but expensive dinner at La Roca. Uploading was slow at first but when I returned after dinner, I finally got the fast uploader software working and things cruised along. Even so, I didn't finish so I decided to spend one more night in Río Gallegos and get everything caught up tomorrow.
My biggest consternation of the day, however, was Will. He dropped a bomb on me and asked if we could postpone work in Rada Tilly until February or March. I was going to arrive there tomorrow! He acts like the world will end if he doesn't kayak the Río Baker in the next few weeks. I understand that the river will be dammed this year but if it were so critical to kayak it now, he could have planned it out a little instead of just showing up. He's also complaining that traveling with a 40 kg kayak without a vehicle is a pain in the ass. Well, there's a surprise! He really can't afford to screw up his internship project with me. I can hold off until January 25th but my February and March schedule is already booked. I'll be patient; it will work out-providing the world doesn't end.
Megan, on the other hand, made it back to Brevard with the samples intact and no problems with customs. She also announced that she and Dillon have gotten engaged!
I returned to the hotel at about 12:30. I decided to make the trip to Rada Tilly over a few days, stopping in San Julián along the way. I'll get up early and go out to the bus terminal to change my ticket.
