Day 140: January 1, 2008 Río Gallegos
Will and I got up at 7:15. He took a shower and finished packing before we went to breakfast. The guy at the desk called him a cab which arrived at 8:25 to take him to the bus terminal and he was gone. He is off on a 25-hour trip to Bariloche, where he will be kayaking, until he and I meet up on the 13th to work in Rada Tilly. Megan will leave tomorrow for Ushuaia while I go to Punta Arenas. From there, I will fly to Quito via Santiago and on to the Galápagos Islands where I will meet with the Appalachian College Association Group for a week of touring the islands. This will be the second ACA trip that Todd Fredericksen and I have led there in the past year!
I lay back down on my bed and fell back asleep, not awakening until Megan got up at 11:15. We went out looking for a place to eat but the town was still pretty dead. We finally found the Mónaco Café open and ate lunch there.
Back at the hotel, we watched a couple of movies while I uploaded fotos to my blog. I got everything through December 24th up during the course of the afternoon. She found a paper online that gives a date of 16+ million years for the lowest tuff in the Pescazaike section. That means we don't have to bring the heavy tuff sample back to the US!
We went out once to buy empanadas at a bakery around the corner. We left the hotel for dinner at 10:00. The Sun was still up and wouldn't set for another 45 minutes. For dinner we went to El Roco where she had salmon and I had lamb. We both agreed that the trash and high cost of Río Gallegos was getting to us and that we would be happy to leave this place behind. Back at the hotel, we both packed up our bags for our respective journeys. She finished well before I did and went to bed. I was up until 12:30 before I finished and turned in.

Hey JR! I can't believe I've never written to you on this thing, but I love reading it! You're so amazing. I'm so glad you got out of ole Breveski for more than a couple weeks this time. You deserve it!
And it sounds like you're doing great and having fun. I can't believe you're gonna see Todd (although I guess you've seen him plenty since our trip)! Please tell him I said hi!
I'm doin well. Still in Atl. and actually applying to GSU for a masters in Social Work! Crazy huh? But I'm excited about it. (although I guess this means you're out of the question for a recommendation letter huh? :-)
Seriously though, I'll try to write more now that I've done it once. Take care of yourself, and thanks for the thorough blogs and pics, allowing people like me the chance to live vicariously through you!

Jess!
My love, I just found this comment. It's great to here from you! I just left Todd about 36 hours ago so I didn't have a chance to pass on your hello.
Tell me how you are doing. I have thought about you so often, wanting to be there for you if you need a shoulder. I'm thrilled to discover that I guess I have been there for you! You are welcome t come down and join me in the adventure in March. I'm planning on returning to the US sometime at the end of March.
Let me know what is going on in your life. I care; I really do.
Love you always,
JR
