Day 88: November 10, 2007 In Salta

I really was tired, sleeping in until 10:30, the latest I've slept in a long time. After showering, I came out to discover that there was going to be an asado at the apartment at noon for some visiting geologists from Pluspetrol and Tecpetrol. One of them turned out to be Gustavo Vergani. He had been in my 1989 Fulbright course at UNSa and was the top student; he worked for YPF at the time. Another former YPF geologist was also there,Daniel Stark, who I had met several times over the years. Vergani and Stark published a couple of classic papers on the Neogene strata of Salta in the 1980's. Three other men and a Venezuelan woman geophysicist rounded out the guest list. We ate out on the patio overlooking the city. It was clear but clouds were starting to come over the mountains to the east. We could see that a strong wind was kicking up a lot of dust to the southeast. Where we sat the breeze was comfortable but by the end of the meal it was cooling off. The Asado

The guests left to catch their flight back to Buenos Aires. Elena and I went down to the office to get on the computers. I had 125 emails, about half of which I just trashed. I surfed the news sites to see what had happened in my absence.

Elena was invited to another asado so she took the bus into town at about 3:30. It rained a little bit around 4:00 but never developed into a storm. I stayed in the office until 7:30 and then went back to the apartment and hung out with Bernardo and Jorge. I cooked hamburgers for dinner while they had ham, cheese, potato, and salad. We drank a couple of bottles of good wine before they went to bed. I stayed up to let Elena back in when she returned at 12:20. Then, I set the house alarm and went to bed.
