Day 64: October 17, 2007 In Salta
After writing in the apartment, I went down to the office but all of the good computers were engaged so I just got frustrated on the bad one for awhile before giving up and waiting for one of the better ones to open up. When that happened, I uploaded everything. Cele came in and introduced me to her boyfriend, Lautoro, who I had seen the past couple of days but not met. He's from Buenos Aires and is studying to be a cinematographer. He seems like a good guy.
Elena came down and saw Cele for the first time since she visited us in 1999. They were very fond of each other then and seemed to connect immediately. Our reunion broke up when Tuity, Claudia, and I went into his office to plan out how and when we are going to get our field work done. We agreed that after I return from san Juan, Chopi and I will collect the samples from the Quebrada Chuñapampa. Claudia will try to break the gridlock with the locals in Quebrada San Lucas. We will also collect a paleomagnetic pole sample at the base of the Angastaco section.
I rode out to Elena's school with Estela, Luchi, and Elena to meet with the Vice Director. She is concerned that Elena is spending too much time with the boys, Carlos in particular, and not integrating herself with the girls. She said Elena doesn't participate in class and doesn't do her homework. Although I am concerned to some extent, I never really envisioned that Elena would be a great student here. The important thing, to me, is that she get a good base in Spanish and I think she is doing that very well.
I took the bus into town and ate a lunch of empanadas at La Chueca. When I left, it finally happened. I got into a cab to go home and the cabbie said, "Should I take you to your home in Grand Bourg?" I recognized the guy from a couple of weeks ago. We swung by the lavadero to report the missing River jersey but, as expected, no luck.
Back at the office, I spent the rest of the afternoon revising my lecture files for the course in San Juan . I quit at about 9:00 and went up to the apartment. Elena bought a new River jersey. We decided to eat the rest of our hamburger for dinner. Jorge and Bernardo were cooking, as well, so the four of us had a merry time in the kitchen. Bernardo, Jorge, and I did the dishes and then called it a night.
