Day 26: September 9, 2007 In Salta
We spent a leisurely Sunday morning on a warm, sunny day. At around 12:30, we rode downtown with Jorge who left us off with a large load of laundry at the lavadero. We left the laundry there and then walked the eight or so blocks to the Plaza 9° Julio. We went to the MAAM so that Elena could see the mummy. They must have thought I was Argentine on Saturday because they only charged me three pesos. The guy asked where we were from. I said the US and he charged us ten pesos each. I then noticed the posted price differential.
Elena was a bit unsettled looking at the frozen girl who was probably about 15 when she died. She asked why they would sacrifice the young when the elderly would seem to be more likely candidates. I pointed out that the elders make the decisions that send the young to their deaths and used Iraq as an example.
We ate a light lunch of empanadas at a restaurant way back in the galería in which I had eaten the previous day. Elena had a couple of things she wanted to get at a farmácia so we walked down the Peatonal Alberdi. I pointed out that siesta time on a Sunday in Salta was not the time to go shopping. The peatonal was just about deserted and very few businesses were open. We walked the block along San Martín to the other peatonal on La Florida. Surprisingly, we found a supermarket that was open. Elena got what she needed and we picked up some groceries before walking back to the Plaza to look for a cab back to Grand Bourg. It was hot. The leaves still are not out on some of the trees so I was able to get a good foto of the Salta cathedral from the center of the square.
After putting everything away, we went down to the office and got on the internet. We're such nerds. We stayed there for several hours, each doing our own cyberthings. I worked on my course. At 8:30 we were both getting hungry so we went to the apartment and cooked some hamburgers we had bought earlier in the afternoon. They tasted great with chimichuri and wasabi mustard.
Bernardo and Jorge came in and each made his own dinner. I tried to do some writing on another story but just couldn't find the groove. Bernardo and I had a trago on the balcony before turning in at 11:30.
