Day 23: September 6, 2007 In Salta
It's always a struggle to get Elena up and moving but this morning was more complicated. For some reason, Luchi was coming by at 7:30 so Elena got up at 7:00 and was almost ready when Luchi arrived in a taxi. I hit the button to open the gate for her. When she got to the building, though, she tripped the alarm. I still didn't have the code to turn it off so soon it was blaring away. Jorge got up and shut it off. The girls left soon after.
My morning routine continued as usual until about 9:30 when Bernardo called to tell me the security company was at the office and would later give me a personal code for the alarm. I went down to the office and was glad to see that the BC email was working again. I spent awhile with correspondence, blogging, and reading more of Butler's book. I received word from Silvia Palacios that I will be invited to give the Paleomag course at the UN San Juan in October. Before lunch, I returned to building my PowerPoint presentation. I'm expanding my Spanish vocabulary by leaps and bounds!
After lunch in the apartment, I returned to work on the presentation. Marcela invited me to come to her English class next week so that they can practice with a native speaker. Bernardo showed me how to arm and disarm the alarm system and we tested it out. Toyo gave me a set of electronic keys to the gates so now I am finally independent to come and go without needing someone to open gates. I enjoy living in a place that is as secure as this. In addition to these features, there are also numerous surveillance cameras.
Elena returned from the English institute at about 8:30. I was looking forward to going out with her but they had had a party at the institute and she wasn't hungry. Just as I was leaving to eat by myself, the guys returned from shopping and invited me to eat with them. Jorge and Bernardo made pork and a salad that we ate with Toyo. They also bought the first strawberries of the season, so Elena did eat some dessert.
It was a little cooler on the balcony, after dinner. We sat and talked until 11:30 before going to bed.
