Day 20: September 3, 2007 In Salta
Day 20: September 3, 2007 In Salta
I got up at 7:30 and had breakfast. I wrote while watching CNN. One of the benefits of living abroad is that we get CNN International which is so much more informative about things going on all over the world. We almost never hear about Hollywood scandals/misbehavior. How refreshing!
After writing for half an hour, I went to the office. Tuity left for a meeting in Mendoza early in the morning, flying to Buenos Aires. I met Claudia and we went out to UNSa. I spent 20 minutes talking with Cecilia del Papa to see what she is up to. She gave me a reprint of her recent Geology paper. Next, I went to José Viramonte's office where he, Berta, and I ironed out some details of my upcoming course.
On our way back to XR, Claudia invited me to accompany her to Jujuy on Tuesday to visit Betty Coira, if she is there. Claudia teaches at UNJ every Tuesday. She dropped me off at the office and I went in. Toyo told me that Tuity had his laptop stolen while in Buenos Aires. Toyo had already sent a backup computer, with everything that Tuity needed for his presentation, to Mendoza via overnight bus. It should get there in the morning.
I learned how to upload fotos to me travel blogs and put some up for practice. Then I started to get serious about building the Powerpoint presentations for my course and outlined what needs to go in them.
Elena and I were going to eat dinner next door but forgot that they are closed on Mondays. We walked down to the road and immediately caught a passing taxi into town. He took es to El Solar del Convento. Something big is going on. A lot of big trucks carrying movie-making equipment jammed Caseros, slowing traffic to a crawl.
We tried the parillada for two. It was more complete than the one at the Vista del Condor. I was determined to eat everything to completely argentinize my system so I ate portions of the kidney, thyroid, ovary, and udder as well as the chorizo, morcilla, and asado de tira. The steak (asado de tira) cut and chorizo were very good and everything else was surprisingly edible. The ovary is the best. The kidneys were not too foul-smelling, although a bit of it lingered in the taste. Everything else was just kind of bland.
We walked around the plaza and finally found a cab that took us back to the apartment. Toyo greeted us and told me that Betty Coira would not be in Jujuy so I decided not to go with Claudia this week. Elena and I got on the internet in the office for an hour before heading up to our room and going to bed.
