Day 15: August 29, 2007 In Salta

I got up at my usual time but school didn't start for Elena until the afternoon so the señorita was able to have a leisurely morning while I went down to the office. I discovered that the next round of grant submissions for the Petroleum Research Fund is about to open. I will get in on that.

The announcement for the January Galápagos Islands trip was distributed to all of the Appalachian College Association colleges. I am really looking forward to returning and visiting several new islands.

I spent a couple of frustrating hours looking for my old data from the Río Léon in the Sierra de Aguaragüe to no avail. I can't imagine what happened to it. At the end of the day I told Tuity about this dilemma. I was pretty sure he would have copies of all of my files. He knew they were around somewhere and told me to get Toyo to find it in the morning.

Elena returned from school around 7:00. She had a good time, again. We sat around talking for about an hour before deciding to go into town to see if we could get her a soccer ball. I called a cab and we went down to the road to get it. Unfortunately, the guy on the phone said Durand 697 instead of Durand 397 so the cab was sent to the wrong place. In all, we waited more than 45 minutes before the cab came.

Once we were in El Centro, I went to an ATM. The dollar gained a little against the peso. I got 3.16 pesos/dollar. We went down to the internet locutorio on Caseros so that Elena could catch up on her email. We stayed there too long to be able to buy a soccer ball; everything was closing up when we left. We walked into a nice restaurant near the corner of Caseros and Alberdi. We ordered a pizza. I finally bought a Salta Cerveza Negra, one of the best dark beers I've ever tasted. It's too bad they are so hard to find outside of the city.

We took a cab back to the apartment. I had a good conversation with the driver. He told me he usually hangs out at the Caseros and Alberdi taxi stand in the evenings and hoped we would see each other again.

It was almost midnight by the time we got home. Neither of us was tired so we stayed up writing for fifteen minutes before turning in.
