Day 6: August 20, 2007 In Salta
Feeling worn down after three long days of travel, we both slept in until after 10:00. When I got up, I felt the need to get working on my journal while Elena finished Harry Potter #6 and started #7. I wrote for several hours over coffee. Just as I was starting to get pretty hungry, Bernardo came in and suggested ordering empanadas for delivery for lunch. We order 20: 4 each of beef, chicken, cheese, pesto, and jerky. It was an excellent choice; they were gone in no time.
Bernardo and I talked about Iceland after lunch. I thought I had all of my recent photos on the computer and offered to show them to him. I discovered I only had the 2004 shots so I set about transferring all of the photos I've taken this summer, since I bought the new camera, from camera to computer. I was relieved to find that I had the right wires with me. Elena was happy to discover that she can recharge her Ipod from my computer.
Bernardo went out with a friend in the late afternoon. In the evening, we watched CNN before going into town. Elena and I took a cab to El Centro to find an internet place. We walked around for awhile without success but finally found one on Alvarado. We spent about an hour and a half catching up on our emails. After that, we strolled over to El Solar del Convento for dinner. Before we were even seated, Claudia came up to us and invited us to eat with her and Matías, her son. Cecilia del Papa was sitting at another table with friends.
It was like pulling teeth to get Elena and Matías to speak with each other. He is 14 and does well in English. Elena agreed to accompany him to his English class the next night. She was excited about that. Along with papas fritas and salad, we shared a plate of surubí, a local fish, Elena continues to eat more than I've ever seen her eat.
After dinner we walked around El Centro until we found a cab that took us back to Grand Bourg. It was just about midnight when we arrived so we turned in.
