we arrived in uruguay via ferry from buenos aires yesterday... reminiscent of the ferry to nantucket, excpet it had a huge arcade and a duty free store and a few sections with seats like airplanes... got into town and headed out for lunch. while sitting for lunch, our first hour in uruguay, was probably the most random hour spent in south america. here is what went by as we ate:
not one, but two golf carts full of people on two separate occasions
an old 40s (or 30s...old) mint condition blue convertible
tons of mopeds going slower than you could walking
some guy dressed like an old conquistador
and a band with two women dressed like the chiquita banana lady meets aunt jemima, followed by some guy dressed up like an old man with a beard over his face and a cane, and a three piece percussion band.... just strolling down the street like a parade.... only it was just them..............

next day we went to visit the historc downtown, which the whole thing is listed as a UNESCO world heritage site for its portugese and spanish architecture dating back to colonial times... lots of museums, including the incredibly interesting tile museum and the indigenous museum which housed lots of bookcases of uncarved and oridnary rocks also dating back to colonial times and longer i suppose. but there was one museum that had some crazy fossils, including a saber tooth tiger skull, teeth and all. and a taxidermy alligator with googly eyes glued to its head. creepy.
