Flores is an island in Lago de peten Itza (a fresh water lake).

I didn't have high hopes for Flores, people had told me it was only worth staying to see the Tikal ruins, the lonely planet also didn’t paint the prettiest picture, saying it was too built up. So obviously I was keen to get in and out of there as quick as possible, I was convinced one day was the most we should stay! Luckily worldly Maccers out debated me into staying an extra night

On arrival I loved the place, the locals are all smiling and the pace of life is chilled. We arrived in town feeling hot and bothered and wasted no time getting down to the lake for a quick dip. The water was perfect and we sat on the jetty watching all the local kids doing an array of flips, each trying to beat their mates last attempt.

That evening, we experienced probably one of the most beautiful sunsets I have seen. Feeling totally at ease and relaxed we walked to the top of the island and bought a huge meal with a drink for R14 each, an absolute steal. We then sat on some stairs and watched a scintillating 2 on 2 basketball match.

The next day I risked my life and convinced Maccers and Sean to go on the earliest Tikal tour leaving at 4.30 sharp (if you have ever seen Maccers too early in the morning you’ll know why). Tikal is a Maya ruin that dates back to 700BC. The ruins where awesome, but I felt the tour was a bit long and Macpowter probably could have comfortably smashed the whole experience in about 2 hours rather than 6… After 2 ruins, I feel we have done the ruins thing, we will be focusing on more of the adventure side from now on.

We waved goodbye the next morning and proceeded to Semuc Champey.
