The hostel I stayed at in Marseille, called Vertigo Vieux-Port, was nothing short of excellent. The amenities were excellent, the staff helpful and friendly and the rooms were modern and immaculate. My plans for Marseille were always of transition. It's surprising how many chores can rack up in a week even when you’re travelling and not working.

However I wanted to use this main day in Marseille to at least take a small selection of its sights. My first task was to arrange my onward travel to Nice. So after writing up yet more of my blog I headed off to the train station. My confidence with the French tongue was growing, so much so that when the lady behind the counter said she didn’t speak English I was able to order my ticket in Pigeon French, with the assistance of some hand waving and pointing at the date and time on the screen. Reading that back clearly I am still poor at French just not as poor as when I arrived!

After successfully sorting my train reservation I decided to walk back through the city centre to the harbour side. I took in the market and main shopping area, stopping of for some water melon, which seems to be a local speciality and headed back to my hostel to dump my things, before heading to the beach for a swim.

The beach in Marseille isn’t up to much, in fact it was overcrowded and not very nice, therefore I decided to go for a wonder around the docks. It was so hot in Marseille (34C+) that you had to try and stay in the shade wherever possible.

After my stroll around the docks I headed up to the basilica, where you have exceptional views of the city. After this I headed back to the hostel and hooked up with Craig from Texas and chilled down by the harbour with a couple of beers. Having got most of my chores out of the way I was ready to move on to Nice tomorrow.
