At 3,635m Chivay was the start of the acclimatisation process in preparation for the Inca trek. After heaving for air having taken the bags up a couple of stories to our room, the prospect of climbing a 4,700m pass in a few days time became a lot more daunting.
A short drive from Chivay was the impressive Colca Canyon where we got to see the enormous Condors ride the thermals, at times not more than a couple of metres above our head. These guys are massive with a wingspan of up to 3m.
On the drive back we got to try out the roof seats for the first time which was pretty good fun.
