Time to leave Nkhata Bay and head off to our next home called Kande Beach on the so called Chintheche Strip. We waited patiently (there is nothing else to do) while the mini-bus slowly filled all its seats. Then we head off south along Lake Malawi.
After about 2 hours we were dropped off at the turning for Kande Beach. Then we had to walk the 4kms down a sandy track. Corr were we glad to arrive there finally and even then we didn't know if there was a room for us at the end! Thankfully there was and we checked into a very nice chalet with HOT water shower. Oh luxury!
Kande Beach is situated right on the beach. The water was very calm and a beautiful blue
The restaurant was unique as it had a library in the shape of the back end of a Land Rover (see photo) which was very original. Never before have we seen a Landy library. One was also allowed to borrow (only) any book to read whilst you stayed at Kande.
There was room for the usual overland trucks too (just like Chitimba Beach) but only 2 dropped by in the 2 nights we stayed there.
What was really nice to see and this appeared to be a daily occurrence was the horse trekking.
After taking a 2/3 hour trek the horses and riders would turn up at Kande Beach, have their saddles taken off and then the horses and riders, now on bare back went into the lake for a soak and a swim.
Some of the horses literally rolled over in the water with their riders making a quick jump for safety. I didn't go for a trek but I found it both lovely and very amusing to watch the others that did.
In the 2 days we stayed we made friends with a very nice man Manfred. Originally from Germany but had spent many years working aboard. His home was in South Africa, well that's where his wife still lived but he was now based in the capital of Malawi, Lilongwe. He was spending a long weekend at Kande Beach and just so happened to be returning to Lilongwe the same day we were going to be heading there. And guess what? He gave us a lift.
All 5 hours not cooped up in a mini bus but sitting in the luxury of a normal car. Heaven.
Then when we arrived in Lilongwe the fun started............
