15th March 2006

So we left hot and sticky Mysore and took the Shatabi Express train (in A/c chair class, no less) to Bangalore. Wow if we thought Mysore was hot and sticky Bangalore was a million times worse!! A typical city, the 5th largest in India. And by far the noisiest we had ever encountered so far too. Rickshaws, motor bikes, buses, cows, people all hooting horns and spewing out fumes, yes even the cows were.

We choose a hotel near to the main shopping hub of the city. This city really likes to shop too. It was a real shock to us to see such huge modern shopping malls just like you would find at home or in America.
Shopping center
And the shops within them were your usual Nike, Reebok, Levi, Calvin Klien, and tonnes more. Then you had the food courts with the usual fare on offer such as Indian curries, Chinese, Thai, Sub-Way, KFC, MacDonalds etc. Makkie D's.......We saw those Golden Arches and were instantly sad? Well we got really sad actually as the meal was such a disappointment. NO Big Mac's. But this is MacDonalds right? Yes but we don't serve beef? Ahhhhhhhh Second disappointment of the evening was the Maharaja Mac Martin choose to eat. Their next best thing supposedly. Wrong! it was disgusting, can't even tell you what sort of meat if any was in it. So I thought I would have the safer option of the chicken, WRONG, and the third disappointment of the evening. The chicken tasted like it had been previously chewed, by one of the employees perhaps? The only thing worth having was the chips but we were so on a downer that they, by no way made up for the crap we choose to accompany them. Some might say that is "just deserts" for going to Mac Donalds. So OK we got sucked in by the big fast food giants, we will know better next time. Or will we?
Quick answer NO. Next day having nearly forgotten our misadventure to Makie D's we saw the familiar sign of Sub-Way. Mmmmm healthy food....Mmmm fresh baked bread........Mmmmmmm fresh green salad........Mmmmmmmm hot sizzling steak and cheese bloody beef! And to make matters worse they had a picture of the sizzling steak and cheese sub on the wall. How cruel can you get? Yet more disappointment to come as we opted for the hot roasted chicken. Well I can only guess that they employ the same person from Makkie D's to pre-chew their chicken too. It was gross.

So what else did we do in Bangalore except continue our mission in search of the Holy Grail of all fast food giants? Read comes later
One of the main reasons to visit Bangalore was to meet up with on of our ex tenants from our little house in England. Some of you may remember that we have a house somewhere in the south of England, that we rent out. Well for the last 3 years it was rented to an Indian I.T company based here in the Indian I.T World of Bangalore. We got to know Aman (who was sent over as one of their employees) after few visits to the house to do some maintainence.
We mentioned to him (last September) that we hoped to visit India soon. He gave us an e mail address and we in time, descended on his door step. Poor man didn't know what had hit him. We went out for dinner and 10 pin bowling with his new wife Rakhi, of 3 weeks
and we spent the day with them both eating such delicious Indian food home cooked by Rakhi and got to watch their Hindu Wedding DVD. We felt honored to share such a special occasion. The ceremony itself appears such a complex mix of emotions held over 3 days. A truly memorable event, a big thank you to Aman and Rakhi for sharing it with us. We wish you all the best in your future together. XX

So now back to the quest for the Holy Grail. We were walking along the road when in front of us stood Colonel Saunders. Yes that grey haired old man from KFC. Should we shouldn't we? We had already been burnt twice.......we made our way up the steps.....stopped, looked at each other....what have we got to loose? Yes we were sucked in for a 3rd and final time. It was our last evening in India's 5th largest city, we had to leave on a high.
Fingers crossed we ordered our chicken meals. Did they employ the same person from Makkie D's and Sub-Way to chew their chicken too we so wanted to ask? The first bite told us NOOOOOOOOOOO. The chicken was just like home. Hooray and the chips were great too. At last we had found the Holy Grail. Well done KFC for coming up trumps. It was so good we had double helpings later that same evening. We went back to our hotel satisfactually stuffed!

Just to say we did visit the famous Krishna Temple in the north of the city. It was on a Sunday so the whole world was there too with us 2 lonely white faces doing the usual people watching. Great temple amusing people too. That's all for now. Love from India xx
