almost 3 weeks in ayacucho!
Entry 11 of 12 | show all | print this entry |
Hola ! Sorry for poor spelling and grammar, the keyboard is so weird! It´s so funny being here and understanding so little! I found out the other day that there are 6 roosters living on my roof! And 2 guinea pigs we´ll eat later! Apparently this was common knowledge! I go through the days lost without even realizing it! I´m very vulnerable but its pretty funny too! I have a superbad sunburn on my back from doing hand laundry on the roof for two hours with the roosters...sorry Mom! I went and bought 60 SPF sunscreen now' much stronger! I´ve had a few outing with my family now' they´re really interested in showing me new things and its super appreciated! My dad Senor Juan, mom Senora Hedy, my sis Carina is 28 I think, my sis Carmen is 24 I think, and my bro Julio is 20 and no I do not have a crush on him. Family here lives together until marriage and often after marriage too. Its kind of beautiful! I love having siblings my age because they give the real information and know how to joke around. Julio always makes fun of my terrible spanish. We go out shopping which is common here. There are people on the street in costume who you pay to move like toys. One is a king who stands on a box. My family is trying to hook me up with him because he is the only tall guy here and is white because of his mask. We went out for dinner a few times too. They eat hickory sticks on burgers' I will forever now too! I also ate...guinea pig! It was not bad but VERY stretchy...Good news is that I´m eating now! I feel better and am buying more iron foods still. Im getting more money from CWY to put me on a special diet! With the family we went to the countryside and played volleyball together which was so perfect! First exercise! AND I found somewhere I can run here AND A POOL!!!!!! I cried when I saw the pool I was so happy. Nerdy, no?They take me on drives to see weird enormous plants! Wait ´til you see pics! I just really love them and as much as I want to come home, am dreading when I have to leave them! I had a really low time here, while where if I was in Lima I think I wouldvé taken a flight home! When its hard, its soooo hard! These 3 month are going to be tough I think. But like mom said, just remember how annoying my family is and then I wont want to come home! Terrible, not true! I miss you guys like I´d miss my toes! Someone told me you cant climb without toes and i like to climb things, so that means I miss you a ton! But I walk out on the street and look around at how cool my life is to feel better! I dont want to miss out on anything feeling sad! But man its hard to be away from friends and family! FELIZ ANO NUEVO! HAPPY NEW YEARS! What a fiesta here! Oh man its so differeent! My hostmom bought me yellow underwear for good luck! We put raw lentils in our pockets for good luck! We eat 12 grapes at midnight with one wish each..but i cheated and wished my usual wish 12 times! Hope it works! We bathe in flowered boiled water! We had firecrackers in the house! Julio threw some at me and almost made me pee my pants! We drink strong wine and dance and eat fruit bread and hot chocolate! Then around 2 am we go out with our friends! Our group was banned from clubs because of danger so we went to some house party, I dont know whos house it was but the whole group was there. We danced and drank which is absolutely necessary here. The hosts give free beer and its super rude to turn it down, so the canadians hid because we were all on so many pills and didnt want to drink too much. I got several proclamations of love that night which was pretty funny but I turned them all down and am one of the few uncoupled people left in the group! Everyone in couples has completely changed there objectives-Bah! Anyways, I tried some salsa with some guy whose name i cant pronounce and I´m terrible, but I´ll learn! Went home around 7 am and slept for 4 hours before the next day began! I feel guilty here because of how much english there is. When they rent movies its in englich with subtitles' how unfair is that? But they love having me around because the subtitles stop a lot and now I can replace them! They listen to a lot of english music too but dont get the lyrics so my job here with Julio is to translate his music collection... I cooked today! I dont think they liked it. Lunch here is huge and dinner is only a bun so I made a big lunch of hot pasta salad thingy with mashed potatoes and a squash thing. Thats what I call it. They wanted Canadian food but I knew that if there wasnt steam and everything supercooked they´d hate it. So I compromised. But buying the food in the market was nuts cuz nothing is the same- for example the squash wasnt like our squash at all. So because I suspected they´d have trouble with different food I made a dessert too. They never eat desserts here because of price, but I just made rice krispie squares (with another weird cereal and some sort of marshmallow) and they adore me now! Never can go wrong with those! So simple! Our educational days have started and one on prostitution here is done. Super super interesting. Im working with Lisseth now for Politics here (Participatory Budget regarding Brazil) and then one on the Quechua subculture here. Jobs start next week and we´re working in groups of 4 instead of two this time which I like. Almost all the jobs are with homeless children, or children who are forced to work on the streets which is basically everyone. It´ll be a shock I think! That´s all for now I think. I went to the post office and asked about my address and the last email was correct- mail will come to me they promised. I sent a letter home on the 5th, they say 6 days I dont believe it. Date letters to me and when they were sent so I can figure it out please! I miss you all terribly, you really have no idea! I really hope everything is wonderful and you´re all dancing with happiness because of how cool your lives are! Shake your booty! Okay, peace! Love, Shannon!
