the end of our trip through San Blas was originally supposed to have us arrive in the port of Cartagena. HOWEVER. we were surprised to learn that while we were on the ship, Cartagena decided to temporarily close their borders to passenger boats unless the Captain wanted to pay a hefty fine. many of the boats delayed their voyages until the mess cleared up but our Captain wanted to push on and we were eager to follow. the trend of sailing through San Blas has been a thriving business for the past twenty years and boats are mostly owned by foreigners. rumor is that Colombia wants in on the deal and by regulating fines to foreigners, it will allow a better opportunity for Colombians to acquire the market.

by continuing on our voyage it meant that we would have to find another port which would allow us in without a fine. that port was CAPURGANA, a small colonial town which up until five years ago was TOO DANGEROUS for tourists due to the guerilla warfare. the closed border preserved the town and its originality from modern day changes. paved roads, cars, etc.

eight days at sea and we were ready for land. personal space. and SHOWERS. walking through the narrow cobblestone streets we still had our sea legs. every time you stood still or sat down you could still feel the motion of the ocean and things would sway for a few seconds. Scotty and i spent our twenty four hours there eating, showering and sleeping. it was GLORIOUS.
