We woke around 08:00 and had left the hotel by 09:15. We had to stick to a tight time schedule in order to catch our flight to Sydney.

The first thing we had to do was return Elvis to the rental company. When we had rented Elvis in Aukland, the guy told us to allow around an hour for the van to be checked over when we returned it, so we planned to arrive at 09:45. We had arranged a shuttle bus to pick us up at the rental company to take us to the airport at 10:30.

We arrived at the rental company right on schedule but the gates were locked and not a soul was in sight. It was Anzac Day, a public holiday. We had directions of what to do if the gates were locked but didn't fancy hanging around doing nothing for 45 minutes, so drove around the city again looking for somewhere to get a couple of flat whites. Nothing was open, so we returned to the rental company, parked up Elvis and waited for the shuttle bus, which arrived spot on time.

Everything went smoothly from then on. I watched a good film on the flight; 'I'll give it a year' which made me laugh out loud on occasions. The inflight food was acceptable as were the two mini bottles of white wine that were handed to us, compliments of Quantas!

We were able to get straight in to a cab as soon as we exited the airport. Terry had copied the address of the hotel I had booked online on a piece of paper and gave the driver the address. He drove us to the centre of the city and dropped us outside the hotel,The Meriton; which looked like a top class hotel. We probably got screwed by the taxi driver who charged us $35 for the fare, he didn't have the meter going and seemed pretty cheesed off that so many people were travelling into Sydney on Anzac Day - right miserable b........

We walked into the hotel and I went to check in. The guy behind the reception desk couldn't find me on the computer. I started to explain that I had booked through Booking.com and he asked to see the confirmation email. Terry got up to support me, assertively assuring the guy behind the desk that we were at the right place. I got the IPad out of my bag and displayed the confirmation email to him; it was then that he pointed out that we were supposed to be in a Meriton hotel nearer the airport; Terry had copied down the wrong address.

We managed to get another cab straight away and typically it cost us another $21 to go back the same way we had come. When we got to the hotel and checked in, I stood next to a notice on the receptionists desk informing the following:

We were allocated a fantastic modern suite on the 18th floor and had wonderful views over Sydney. We walked to a local supermarket and bought some Pasta, Sauce and Cheese and I made us a simple meal. We watched the sun go down over the city then relaxed in the apartment, watching TV and drinking the free wine. Our Australian adventure had begun.

Mum on

No matter where you are there is always someone waiting to screw you out of money, it gives me the greatest pleasure when I can say "I checked the price and that is what I'm going to pay, and no more". but the day seemed to have ended perfect for you ., that was a bonus. xxxx
