We lost a further six hours in time travelling from Thailand to New Zealand, so Terry experienced the shortest birthday ever!

We arrived in Sydney at 11.00 Sydney time, to transfer to another flight to complete the journey to Aukland. We had about an hour in Sydney airport and really enjoyed walking round it. Well, we enjoyed using our legs after the 9 hr flight from Bangkok.

The flight to Aukland took just over 3 hrs and we landed at 17:00 Aukland time. It took an hour to get through customs and although we hadn't done anything apart from sit on our bums all day, we were flagging!

Outside of the airport we enquired about the cost of a taxi to our hotel and were quoted $75. A quick calculation confirmed this was around £40.00. Having got used to paying an average of £2 per journey regardless really of the distance in Thailand, this was quite difficult to take on board. Terry was about to try bartering when I noticed a shuttle service just over the road advertising $21.50 per person to any address in the city, so we wandered over and went with them.

It took just over 30 mins to get to the hotel; so a fair distance from the airport. This made paying a little easier.

We were allocated a room on the eighth floor. The room was compact but clean. We freshened up and went for a wander. Having survived on aeroplane food since we left Phuket, we felt we needed something a little more substantial to eat. We also thought that if we could stay awake until 22:00 ish), our bodies might adjust better to the time difference and jet lag.

We had forgotten that it was Good Friday and many of the restaurants were closed. We walked toward the harbour and passed many restaurants specialising in international cuisine, specifically Korean and Japanese food, which we didn't fancy. We almost had to resort to Burger King, then Terry spotted an Italian style restaurant, which we ended up eating at. I had a Lasagne and Terry had a Linguine and we both had small beers. The bill came to $ 50. Bills that big were gonna take some getting used to. :-(
