Where I stayed
What I did
Breakfast and giant beans
LK: Slept fitfully in the cold blast of the train's air conditioning, Kriss was more blessed out of the draught and under his blankie (a travel towel). Freshened up with cold water and marzipan scented soap in the restrooms.
KK: Checked in our bags for the train to Denver then went out to play in a warm Chicago morning. Breakfast, a paddle in the Crown Fountains, then up to "The Bean" (curved reflective public artwork - see pic). Chicago Institute of Art then shopping.
LK: Queued up for Train No 5, the California Zephyr, behind some religious order of giggly girls in pressed long dresses and white bonnets.
KK: One of whom had fingers missing, a sure sign of inbreeding if ever I saw it.
LK: Less than a mile out of the station we stopped for the first time – the brakes were sticking, causing a bit of a burny smell. Struggled on, stopped again (already an hour late). Problem clearly fixed itself because we made good progress right up to where we hit the deer.
KK: The deer knocked something loose on the train but presumably came off second best. More delays. We were sitting next to some retired old boys, two of whom were on their way to Moab to go mountain biking. “Never do anythin’ stoopid on the first day” was their first rule. They talked of engines in Ford Mustangs, shooting prairie dogs, servicing tractors and upgrading snow blowers – I was in awe.
LK: Drifted off into sleep, wondering how many more hours Amtrak will have stolen from our lives by the time we wake.
KK: But speaking of stealing, Mrs K got a considerably better night’s sleep having taken half my blankie.
