What I did
Anne Frank Gymnasium

Today marked the first in many days where I find myself being thrown into an environment of the unknown and enjoy it. Tuesday, November 12 (or 12.11.2013 as it is written in Germany) was my first day of school at Anne Frank Gymnasium. I began by visiting Mrs. Hengelbrock as she taught sixth graders English. She began the class with the students in a circle where everyone was playing a name game but could only speak in English. The students had to state their name and then tell of an animal or object whose name begins with the same letter. (I sadly chose Monkey--Miss Miller, Monkey--how absolutely terrible.) The children enjoyed this game immensley, chuckling at the ideas for animals and objects.
After this, all of us on this journey took a tour of the school. The school has three levels, several classes, and a very beautiful arts programs.
The day then ended on a very beautiful, and now historical, moment where all of us international student teachers visited the apple tree planted last spring in rememebrance of all WKU student teachers visiting and teaching in Werne. How very significant something so small can be. It reminds one of the potential behind teaching. One small comment, one minute longer helping an individual, one bad attitude, it can define and establish so much (or so little.)
