Alas it was time to say goodbye to Bertie our backpacker van. After lovingly cleaning out our little fridge of the few beers it had left and packing away our bed for the last time we rolled her back into base. Not before of course a huge goose chase around Christchurch trying to find a garage that could fill up our little gas bottle, all the while our "full tank" of petrol running down. Ah it's never straightforward is it?! After an inspection Bertie was deemed without damage (guess they didn't spot the huge burn by the oven where I put a hot frying pan down!) and we got our bond back.
Melika and Nick have 2 kiwi mates living in Christchurch, Kerry and Kelly. I met them 8 years ago on my first visit to NZ and the South Island. They kindly offered to put us up for the night this time as well so we headed out with Kerry and their baby Finn to their gaff. A very pleasent evening was spent in their sunny backyard supping down beers and swapping stories about our respective travels. The next morning we took their beautiful chocolate labradour Cadbury for a walk along the beach before Kerry dropped us out to the airport for our flight to Wellington where we were planning on meeting up with Quirkey again. So literally a flying visit to Christchurch but like Abel Tasman, somewhere to look forward to spending a bit more time on our next visit.
