The extra few days we spent in Utila meant having to shave a bit of time off our plans for Nicaragua. Our main casualty was the town of Leon, famed as the cultural and revolutionary captial of the country. In retrospect we might have been better off hanging out with some Sandinistas and skipping Granada altogether.

It's not that Granada wasn't pretty or decked out with nice places to eat and drink; It just somehow felt like a poor imitation of either San Cristobal or Antigua. Maybe we would have felt the reverse to be true if our route was from South to North instead of vice versa. Maybe we just need a change of scenery.

Anyway we still managed to pass a pleasent few days there. In true executive backpacker style we had a gaff with a pool so we could go for a dip every day before the rain started in the afternoon Another unnamed church

. My body was surely glad of the exercise after the numerous excesses of the last few months. We also came across a great Irish pub that had only opened 2 weeks ago so we became regualrs at O'Sheas (run by a Dub). O'Sheas was great because they a) served real Irish whiskey b) they served real baked beans. I'm sure you can figure out who was excited about what!!

We met up with our mates from Utila again as well and did a day trip to the islands in Lake Nicaragua where we got to see some spider monkeys. Alas I am yet to fulfill my ambition of hugging one of the little critters. Think we'll stick with these guys for a few weeks now. (The Irish boys that is. Not the monkeys. Although there are striking  similarities.) Not sure how my liver is going to cope!

Travellers Tips

If you are Irish throw aside your doubts about visiting Irish pubs abroad!! They are real baked beans for christ's sakes! He was out when we were there but he also cans of genuis and a large selection of Irish whiskeys. The smoothies are also excellent.
Our hotel with the swimming pool and cable tv cost us 30 dollars a night for a room with a fan. It was called hotel mar dulce and is on calle la calzada. Very nice and friendly owners too.
The boat trip to the islands on the lake was pretty naff and not great value for money either.
