Surfer's Paradise was a nice, relaxed stop. We were staying about a 20 minute walk south of the main drag and about a 20 minute walk in the other direction from a large mall. We went to the mall on the first day due to on and off raining and because we need a few items. We went into Surfer's Paradise beach area later that night and the next day. We were surprised to find most places open to about 2000h (8:00 pm) instead of closing up at about 5:30pm as was usual elsewhere. The beaches were big and beautiful and there was a good mix of older people, families and young dudes (and dudettes.) There was the usual mix of hokey shopping with normal shopping as well. It was very windy and the waves were fairly big, hence the Paradise nomer. It seemed like a smaller Daytona Beach and it is well known for its night life. Also, there were a LOT of high-rises and it seemed like the wealthier retirees were taking over. That could also be said of most of the areas that we have visited so far.
We had fun and Lisa enjoyed her retail therapy. It was nice doing something 'normal' to break up the continual holiday mode while we were at the mall.
