Our delay in Panama City as we waited to board our boat in the San Blas prompted us to leave the city chaos behind for a couple of days in the beautiful mountains nearby. El Valle de Anton is a popular weekend retreat for Panama City folk and sits in the second largest volcanic crater in the world (2 miles wide). Prominent families and wealthy expats have vacation homes that dwarf over the typical Panamanian home (or American home for that matter). The lush green mountains and gardens lined with tropical flowers, papaya, banana and orange trees surround you as you pass through the streets.

We were pleasantly surprised to arrive during the Semana del Campesino, one of the most elaborate festivals of the Valley to celebrate the local harvest. We stumbled upon the Saturday afternoon parade full of kids and community members representing their schools and villages in dance, music and fun. Check out the video below

Other highlights were hiking La India Dormida (Sleeping Indian), taking a dip beneath El Chorro Macho waterfall, visiting hot springs that randomly offered facials for all who entered, checking out the local artisan market and enjoying time cooking in the outdoor kitchen at Cabanas Seguras.

Had we not had to be on a 5 am jeep out of Panama City the next morning, we wouldn't have been concerned that over 100 people were in line to board a 20 person buseta, the supposed last buseta of the day......let's just say it was interesting leaving Sunday evening. Think 1-70 eastbound on a ski season Sunday except everyone wants to (and manages to) get on the same bus :)
