We arrived in Rio at 9pm their time after traveling with British Airways for 12 hour.
We decided to get a taxi straight to the Hostel instead of getting a bus as we were worried the bus wouldn't be safe! Even my husband was worried about getting a bus and he is Brazilian...
It took about an hour to get to the hostel and the taxi driver was telling my husband in Portuguese that the barriers they have up on the side of the motorways was to stop people from the favelas shooting at each other!!
We arrived at our hotel about 1030pm and then went out to find a night club and went to Le boy which was good but then we got really tired by 2am and called it a night
22-04-2012 Copacabana and Ipanema beach
Got up early and had breakfast which the hotel provided which was some ham and cheese then help yourself to toast and croissants etc.
Then we went to Copacabana beach and went in the sea in the waves which was sooo strong and was funny kept getting knocked on my ass. Then we walked to Ipanema beach which was about a 20 minute walk and it is beautiful the view of all the mountains around is amazing!!!
We walked all the way to the end where you have a view of all the favelas which was really cool to see so many different colors hundreds all going up the side of the mountain. We walked up a the hill towards them a bit and stopped at a little bar and had some food. The view from this bar is amazing over Ipanema beach!
Then we went back to the hostel and went out to get some food
The restaurant we decided to stop at was pay per kilo and my husband who is Brazilian ask how much and we thought it was $R10 all you can eat. Well we picked our food then went to pay and it was $R each! We didn't have enough for both of us to pay so one of us had to go back to the hostel... I stupidly decided that I would go and find the hostel (I don't know why beach my husband speaks the language and i only knew a few basic things) I started walking and of course got lost.. It was torrential rain and dark and no one i came acroos spoke english.
I kept asking ''Onde Fica Hi Copa Hostel'' which is where is HI copa hostel, however i didn't realise there is a different word for hostel in Portuguese.. So i kept getting pointed in a direction and after about an hour i was thinking i am way past it I have missed it somehow. I was in a right state by this stage thinking i would just be lost and never find my way and didn't even have the hostel address on me...
So i thought right i know which way I have come I will walk back to the restaurant, after bout 20 mins of walking back in the direction I came I saw my hostel :)))))! I went in looking like a drown rat and gave them person behind the desk the phone number of the restaurant so they could let Thiago know i was ok... Then went up got the money and near enough ran back to the restaurant... Thiago was annoyed and wanted to go back and sleep after that so we did...
I have never got that lost on my travels before and even when i did before i always been on my own so never anyone to disappoint is always worst when you know your ruining someone else night
23.04.2012 Statue of Christ, Escadaria Selaron, Sugar Loaf Mountain
We got up early and booked ourself on a tour to see the statue of christ, Escadaria Selaron and sugar loaf mountain which was leaving at 1pm. So we went to Copcabana and sunbathed during the morning because it was sunny today for the first time since we arrive :D!
We got in the bus for our tour and drove over to Ipanema to pick up some more people. It was mostly Canadian and Americans on the tour..
We then started driving up the mountains towards the statue of christ all past the favelas and there was loads of them! Then we arrived and started walking up towards the statue of christ.
It was cloudy and we were literally in the clouds as we were walking up a women was walking down the hill crying which I am guessing she was upset because she couldn't see the statue properly due to the clouds. We got there and you could see it but just the outline and not the amazing views you see in the pictures one bit!! Was very disappointing that we couldn't see it because one image of Brazil you see everywhere is always the statue of christ and we didn't get the famous picture with the amazing views behind it but was still pretty cool to be there..
Then we got back on the bus and went to Santa maria i think where the steps of escadaria were
We then went to one of the local shops and bought some Coxinhas ( Its a dough with chicken filling, covered in breadcrumbs and then fried) Delicious!!
We then got taken to the massive cathedral in the city center which was very grand and a strange teepee type shape rather than your average cathedral ...
Then onto the BEST part of the trip Sugarloaf mountain.. To get up there you have to go on cable cars which go up really steep.. Thiago is scared of heights so the whole way up he was telling me he hated me for making him go up there!
On the way back to our hostel our tour leader recommended a good place for us to eat so we went there.
It was called Combinade na Brasa locatated ( Rua Djalma Ulrich, 160 - Copacabana). They sold a dish for 2 people for $R29 which had bbq chicken, Black beans, rice, chips and casava shavings. Was very delicious and filling for 2 people. Would defiantly recommend and was quite cheap for Rio compared to the other restaurant we went to the night before.
24-04-2012 Rio De Janeiro city centre - bus booking
Today we got up early and went to the beach. Then we got a local bus to the city centre.
We went in and booked our bus in the bus station. The bus cost 300 reais for both of us which about £100!
Then we went and bought these crisp things and this bloke from the vavelas put his hand out and we gave him some, then this other block came up to us which was quite scary trying to get money and we ended up running to our bus because we felt like he was going to mug us.
We got the bus back to the hostel then that night i went up to the roof top bar in our hostel and met this bloke from California who was working there selling drinks.
He told me he was living there in the favelas and paying 300 reais a month for his house there.
I had a few caprinhas then went to the restaurant we had been to before.
