As usual it took me a while to leave the pleasant Madina Guesthouse in Gilgit; but the main reason was that I wanted to travel with someone this time... and share the pain of transport in Pakistan. At least I would have someone to listen to my complaints!
Fabrice and I finally took off in the usual old, crowded bus, which stopped a dozen of times on the way, so an itenerary of about 140KM (from Gilgit to Phander) took seven hours to complete. After a couple of days chilling out in Phander we continued our journey towards Mastuj - this time we found a Toyota Landcruiser heading our way and it was much more comfortable. The trip from Phander to Mastuj (8 hours for 90KM, just to give you an idea of how difficult and slow the roads in Northern Pakistan are), passing through Shandur Pass was absolutely gorgeous: the mountains, valleys, grazing cattle - including some Yaks - + the good weather all combined for one of the most beautiful trips I have done so far. The scenery was really inspiring!
Shandur Pass is home to an annual festival in which they play a polo match in what is considered the highest polo ground in the World.
Mastuj is a very quiet and friendly village where I stayed for a few days enjoying the good weather, sunbathing, going for short walks. The pace of my trip really changed now and I tend to spend more time just relaxing and taking it easy.
