Finally the long planned trip started

It is quite thrilling to write the first entry for my long awaited adventure.
My first experience in Baku might be considered a signal for what awaited me in Azerbaijan. One of the officers working in the airport asked for bribery in order to speed up my visa application. I pretended not understand and waited in a queue that took over 1 hour. The flight arrived at around 22:00 and by the time I collected my luggage it was almost midnight. In an empty airport I spoke to two gentlemen who were hanging around and they advised me that the hotel near the airport, where I intended to stay for the first night, was closed. One of them happened to be a taxi driver (what a coincidence?!) We agreed he would take me to the center - to Hotel Canub - for 20 Manats (approximately 20 USD). The hotel seemed to have been hit by an earthquake, but since it was very late I had to spend the night and try to sleep... The guy at the entrance (there was no reception) charged me 20 Manat for the night. First day and already over budget. Baku is not a cheap place!
I hardly slept the first night - kept thinking of the plan for the following day: I definitely had to find a better hotel!! In the morning I rushed out - there was not even hot water; and found a slightly better place near by = hotel Azerbajan (the old un-refurbished side). I was to spend 3 (long) nights there. I must be either very attractive or look rich because I was offered sex for money by the women at the `reception` several times. Dodgy, dodgy!! I could not be bothered moving again + invented I was engaged so they would not bother me so much. Baku is a nice city, with lots of beautiful buildings and a nice promenade by the Caspian Sea. It is very messy and badly kept though and the traffic...!!! Azeris seem to have discovered technology and cars yesterday! They drive like crazy and their cars produce all kinds of strange noises with the tackiest horns you can possibly imagine.
Overall, I have never seen such tacky people in my life!!! Azeris are quite friendly and reserved though. In Baku I have the impression of being in an overpopulated country town! To be continued... More thumbnails ...
