So 'tomorrow', (yes this is not 'today'!), we are going to the Simpsons for lunch as Chris and Granny have done for the last 20 something years! Thus tonight I have decided to do the full works Christmas dinner as a) it will be a chilled family thing before lunch the next day (which might be quite hard as Johanna, ringleader of the lunch, is no longer with us), b) its Grandpa's birthday, c) i get to impose lots of candles, tinsel and EVERYTHING for thier entertainment! Having bought an array of lights and decorations (they 'bag' they had was NOT enough!), decorated the dinning room and banned Granny from the kitchen and any thought to the meal (as she is already central to the lunch tomorrow), I made a three course meal which i am quite proud of.
It consisted of a starter of ricotta, spinach and mushroom pasta (freshly made by Leonardo and myself a few days before) with slithers of North Atlantic Salmon (!). The main was stuffed 'turkey breast' (no one does turkey here it seems!) with bacon wrapped cocktail sausages (for which i had to hunt beyond everywhere's efforts to give me cooked sausages at the shops), homemade (from scratch) gravy, breadsauce (granny had made the day before), cranberry sauce, three sprouts (one novel one each), peas and a load of roasted veg (carrot, potato, parsnips, red peppers, onions, garlic and sweet potatos)...etc! Pudding was of course Christmas pud (admittedly bought as the one we'd made was for the lunch), with all the various forms of cream (brandy custard, ice cream, cream and granny's brandy butter!). I also tested out the drive through 'sip and save' (the only way to buy drink here it seems!) to buy a lovely sparking red for the occasion.
Granny and Chris entertained my little Christmas fest, as we all 'dressed up' and they even put up with (and i suspect enjoyed in the setting) christmas music (although some of the songs were DEF Australian in origin as sometimes it sounded like a bunch of rugby guys joyfully rejoicing the hols! Haha).
Admittedly it was so much easier (I imagine) having the main meal in the evening as I didnt HAVE to get up early and actually spent most of the day shopping and wallet hunting (i even had time and energy to buy two in order to return one that day so as to get the right thing for Chris!).
Anyway with coffee and some choc figs i'd picked up we then enjoyed digesting infront of the tv and the (well edited!) Edinburgh tattoo. Clearing up after the others had retired, i was quite chuffed to have done everything from start of mess and food making to eating and cleaning in the early hours.
I also managed to aid father christmas delivery of little things in Australia Post bags!
