"Lao"- as in 'to allow', 'to give', 'to pass'- Origins-Young people speak
So the bus leaves us in Chang Khong and we walk to the border adn check outta Thailand, and get a boat across the water to Laos. OUr greeting in LAos was a sweaty one, if any of you have backpacked you too know teh dilemma of 'shall i take it off for a moments relief, and endure the pain of putting it back on, or leave it on and suffer'..we filled out all the wrong forms and got laughend at by immigration..eventually, about an hour later we get a pretty jazzy stamp and set off up the hill to find a bed and a cold drink. That night we went to find western food for our delicate stomachs and encountered some Irish Tossers, who said we were the most boring people they had ever met. how nice, at least we get our beauty sleep, going to bed at 9pm and all. they needed it i tell thee.
The next day we got on the slowboat- a slow boat down the Mekong river, narrowly escaping the guesthouse with our lives, the woman running it was pretty sure we hadnt paid our room fee (we had) and shouted 'YOU PAY NOW' at us alot. The boat was pretty uncomfortable, imagine church pews and the torment they cause your derriere. well double that, then double that and keep going until you feel nothing except a dull but excrutiating ache of your coccyx, adnd you have some idea of what we went through. Also, imagine the scenery of the film 'the beach', and you'll haev a pretty good idea of what we were forced to look at for 9 hours. A French woman (is v.important in later episodes) whom i named 'Pushy Pissy' pushed in front of me as i queued for the squatter and i glared at her as only a polite, enfuriated Englishwoman could. she barely noticed. grrrrrrr. WE got off the boat at Pak Beng...
