Weds (28th) My reasoning for hitchhiking was that if I was going to hitchhike anywhere, surely NZ would be the safest place to do it and I was becoming quite consious about my money (or lack thereof). So, I sat by the road out of town and stuck my thumb out. I'd never hitchhiked before and was actually taking it quite personally when people woudn't stop. I don't exactly look like an axe murderer so what was wrong?! he he. Anyway, after 20mins I was lucky enough to have a car pull over and a lovely couple called Carol & Paul picked me up with their dog in the back. She was on her way to take her husband to hostipal(!), but kindly stopped for me. They took me about halfway to Christchurch and I had a gold old natter to them before I was out thumbing again. After another 20mins a pair of German guys, Martin and Ben, stopped for me. I did get rather concerned at one point when one asked why I wasn't scared about hitchhiking alone (was he about to turn into a psycho you see on film and say, pull out a chainsaw?). Nope, it's just that they'd seen on the news that only a week before a German girl had been murdered whilst hitchhiking. Hmm, that was enough for me. When they dropped me off in Christchurch I decided to catch the bus to my intended destination; Kaikoura. I think it's safe to say my hitchhiking days are now over. Arrived late in Kaikoura and stayed at the same hostel as last time, once again taking full advantage of their free soup on offer. Had a quiet one that night.
