This morning is probably one I will not ever forget ... I was woken by the first rays of the sunshine and the welcoming grunts of a hippo (which sounds like an outboard motor starting up). On peaking out of the window I was greeted by the sight of a beautiful sunrise over the lake and the said hippo gazing up at me.

The house is designed perfectly to make the most of its setting. All of the windows (many of which were large folding ones left open most of the time) had great views of the lake or surrounding acacia trees. Hopefully my photos will give you a tiny idea of how it looked. Inside the walls were decorated with family photos, including black and white ones of Betty's children with their pets (including a cheetah and a Serval cat!) They definitely showed an era of living that doesn't exist any more.

After breakfast, we were on our way to Nakuru for the inspection (finally - the car passed with no faults what so ever as expected) and then on to Nanyuki and Martin and Tiddy's home. Along the way, we could all feel each other tensing up each time we had to over take a cyclist as our memories kept going back to what had happened only a day and a half before.

From Nakuru we left the troubled, barren lands of West Kenya behind and drove through some fantastic scenery. This included views over huge vast grass planes dotted with acacia trees and at the high elevations the lush coffee, tea and vegetable fields of the Rift Valley. For this drive, (rather oddly in keeping with our newly relaxed mood as our relief at getting through all of the paperwork requirements from the accident was palpable), we were accompanied by the songs of Elvis. It is so hard to either describe how the views looked or capture them in my photos, as they were truly jaw dropping! Kenya is the most beautiful place that I have ever visited.

On arriving 'home', we were greeted by the dogs (Sam the Spaniel and Milly the Bull Mastiff/Rottweiler cross). The house is beautiful (arranged around a courtyard with wooden floors, dark beams, white painted walls and a view across the acacia dotted grass planes to Mount Kenya.

PS I realise I have been saying amazing, beautiful etc a lot ... I just can't help it!
