Alcatraz! It wasn't as scary as the time I went to Adelaide Gaol, because they didn’t have any means of execution, whereas at Adelaide they used to hang people and it freaked me out. But it was super interesting. A short ferry ride over to the island and then a tour was starting just as we got there, and ranger Benny Batom was talking about escapes from Alcatraz, and talked us through all the escapes and escape attempts during the time as a prison. It was really interesting and posed the question of what is escaping? One guy got off the island and over to Angel Island without even getting his feet wet because over the years he managed to collect a military uniform from the laundry service they had on the island and then stow away on a boat. He made it to dry land but only for half an hour because he was then brought back. Is that classed as an escape? He had to go to court and was charged with attempted escape but he pleading not guilty because he DID actually escape, the jury only took 7 minutes to decide though and sent him back to Alcatraz for 5 more years.

After the talk with ranger Benny we did the audio tour which took us through the cell blocks and talked about all different events that occurred in there and stories from different inmates that served time at Alcatraz. They said the biggest downer was the fact that they could see freedom, they could hear people celebrating on nearby shores on New Years eve when the wind came across the bay and carried the sound. They could see the beauty of San Fran but there was a freezing cold body of water between it and them so there was nothing they could do but wait, because trying to escape didn’t prove to be working for others.

After our time on Alcatraz we went back to fisherman’s wharf and had fish and chips and then went back to the hotel and packed our bags so we were ready to begin our road trip the next day!
