Sunday 30th November
It's Sunday lunchtime and I'm chilling out in my room, the radio on and the sun streaming in the window, while back home it's 8pm on a cold rainy night. Where would I rather be, I wonder ..? ;)
This weekend has been going on forever! As Thursday was Thanksgiving, most people had Friday off too so this turned into a 4-day weekend. The weather is really nice and sunny again, weird to think it'll be December tomorrow. On Friday night, I went to San Diego with Amanda and Chris to visit Amanda's sister Erika who lives there. It's about 70 miles south, just off the Mexican border. It took just over an hour to get there, driving the scenic I-5 coastal freeway, although we got slightly lost when coming off the freeway, even with Chris's iPhone's sat nav... glad we didn't end up in Mexico as I didn't have a visa or passport!
San Diego is so nice! Even though it's a city, it has a small town feel to it. Around Orange County and LA everything is spread out (you need a car to get *everywhere*) and looks the same, as it's all been built pretty recently and all merges into one - you don't really get town centres or high streets around here. But San Diego is much more like being somewhere like Kingston - a walkable town with much more character and older buildings.
We met Erika at her house, which is around 100 years old (you don't get anything remotley that old in Orange County!) and met her cat which has a funny tail like a squirrel. We then headed into the town centre for a meal out in a modern-style restaurant that served tapas-style food but a mixture of cuisines rather than just Spanish. I had a really nice spicy chicken dish and tried some steak and ribs from the others. The cocktails were rather nice in there too! Afterwards we headed back to Hillcrest, the district a couple of miles away where Erika lives, and went to a couple of bars, where the drinks were really cheap and really strong! We left just after midnight - Amanda stayed over at Erika's while me and Chris drove back.
On Saturday morning, I slept in before me and Paul drove to San Diego for an afternoon out. This time we didn't get lost until we got to Erika's road as it was a bit confusing with lots of one-way streets. We met up with Amanda who was having lunch with a friend, then went for a walk in the local park, which is also next to San Diego Zoo. The views from the park were amazing and they had lots of different cacti growing, which I went mad over and took lots of photos of as I *love* cacti... although I used to have one on my desk at work but it died. Cacti are supposed to be really easy to look after as they barely need any water, so how mine died I do not know... never let me have pets or kids, I'm not capable!!
After a delicious frozen yoghut, we headed into town and walked around for a while before having dinner in a nice bar. On the drive home I plugged in my iPod to Paul's radio and we listened to playlists mum and dad had made in the past that I still had on there and debated who had the better taste in music... it was a close call but mum narrowly won my vote (sorry dad!)
Today I'm having a nice lazy Sunday, having just caught up with yesterdays X Factor performances on YouTube. I'll upload my cacti pictures in a minute and I'm also going to add my Vegas pics as I'd forgotten all about those. Next week I'm going to go Xmas shopping locally and maybe in LA too, go back to the beach and hopefully book my San Francisco and Seattle trips. Just hope I have enough money for the trips after I've finished my Christmas shopping....
