After leaving the Bay of Islands we headed north to the tip of the North Island.

Cape Reinga has a spiritual significance for the Maoris. At the tip of the country there is now a lighthouse, not as cool as Mizen, but the Maoris believe its where their spirits leave from when they die. Every Maori is to visit this place in their lifetime.

The whole area is surrounded by gorgeous but isolated beaches and the land is burnt. Not too many sheep up here. Out from the lighthouse there are big waves breaking out at sea. The Maori believe it is the meeting of the Male and Female and is the point where the Tasman Sea meets the Pacific Ocean. A pretty spot but isolated. We drove across dirt roads to reach it. Effel was rattled to within an inch of its life!!!!

Hope ye are all well. How’s 6A coming along!!

Love John and Lucy
