I left Cork on Stephens’s day looking forward to seeing Lucy and getting a bit of fun and sun in Sydney. Arrived in Cork airport bright and early on icy roads, but little did I know that I would still be there five hours later? After multiple excuses from Aer Lingus we eventually left Cork airport. Something about the pilot cant drive in the snow. I got to Heathrow eventually and found out I had to wait 12 hours for a flight to Singapore and then Sydney. Got there eventually after a fun but waiting day with 15 people from Cork. 40 hour journey but it was fun.

Arrived in Sydney a day late but Lucy was still at the airport to meet me. So excited I skipped my bag check and pretended I did not have to do it. After a few minutes it was like we were never apart and we looked forward to the fun we would have in Sydney.

We stayed in the City Central Backpackers on George St just next to China town, a classy gaff if I ever saw one. The cheapest in Sydney for Xmas and New Year in fairness. Kind of place with blue lights in the doorway and un responsive people in the TV room come smoking room. It was ‘next to central station so it was easy to get to all the stuff we wanted to see in Sydney.

When I got there Adele and the other back packers were in the room. It hit home that I Was a backpacker in Oz again. It was nice to see Adele and meet the gang in the room. There was English people and Colombian and Leah from Arizona who joined us for a bit on our travels even though we didn’t have the best first impressions!

The next day we went to Bondi during the day for a swim. Nice to see the old haunts again. That night we went and did the Bridge Climb. It was easily the highlight of Sydney for me. It was a bit scary at first but the views and pics that our guide took are really cool. So excited aftrer our climb that we talked about it all night over a drink.

The next day Aine arrived from Melbourne. She stayed in our room. Lucy had not seen her in ages and was delighted to see her.

On New Year’s Eve we got up early and carried our cooking gear and drink to the observatory park to see the fireworks on the bridge. Lucy, Adele, Aine, Leah and I found a good view in the park. There was a couple of thousand people in the park to see the fireworks. We made burgers sausages and a ridiculous amount of sandwiches as we made our way through the slabs of Beer Blonde. Despite a few drizzly moments the sun was shining. A limbo competition started in front of us. People are far too flexible. Frightning. The winner got nothing but became the park legend. The guards spent the day defending the huge oak tree beside the hill. It had become somewhat of an outdoor urinal. About five police spent the day hunting drunken backpackers away from it. In fairness the portaloos were pretty foul. A boy beside us proposed to his girlfriend at about five o clock. I think he knew he’d be too steamed at midnight. They shared a plastic cup of sparkling wine together. Rosemantic! There was a great atmosphere of excitement as people sat about chatting. The fireworks started at nine. The whole bridge was lit up with colour and light. They really put on a show for us. We had a long day of chilling out and drinking in the sunshine so we didn’t last too much longer than the new year. The fireworks were beautiful. Sydney was destroyed after it though I’d say.

Happy New Year all! Love ye xxx
